Guide
The BMW R65 rebuild
The R65 as a base for conversion
The R65 has everything that makes for a great custom build: a rev-happy boxer engine, low weight, and a slim frame that is easy to modify. On top of that, there is a large supply of used vehicles available. It was initially built as a Twinshock (1978–1985) and later as a Monolever (1985–1993) – we have suitable parts for both versions.
We explain the differences in detail in our BMW R65 Customization Guide.

Twinshock or monolever – which one is right for you?
When choosing parts, the rear suspension setup is crucial. Twinshock models (two shock absorbers) are particularly well-suited for classic café racers and bobbers with a short tail. Monolever models (one shock absorber, single-sided swingarm) have a more modern look and offer slightly more ride comfort. Subframes, license plate holders, and fenders are specifically tailored to each variant – please check the product description for the "Twinshock" or "Monolever" designation.
The most important conversion parts for the R65
- Tail conversion kits with TÜV approval for 1- and 2-person operation – the foundation for every new silhouette.
- Exhaust systems made of stainless steel, many with ABE (general operating permit).
- Shock absorbers & fork upgrades for a modern chassis.
- Wiring harnesses, pre-assembled for Acewell, Motogadget, or universal use.
- Headlight brackets, speedometer mounts & handlebars for a clean front end.
For engine overhauls and performance upgrades, check out our Engine and Transmission Service.
Performance, chassis, brakes
Many R65 conversions fail not because of their looks, but because of the suspension. Modern shock absorbers and a revised fork significantly improve handling. As for the engine, a professional overhaul, unleaded conversion of the cylinder heads, and tuning on our dynamometer get the absolute maximum out of the 650cc unit.
FAQ
Questions about BMW R65
Can't find your question? Use our parts inquiry form – we will respond personally.
Which R65 is best suited for a custom build?
For classic café racers and bobbers, the twin-shock models up to 1985 are particularly popular. The monolever models from 1985 onwards are somewhat more comfortable and usually easier to find at a lower price. Both are good bases – the deciding factor is the condition of the engine and frame.
Are the R65 conversion parts TÜV-certified?
Viele unserer Heckrahmen, Kennzeichenträger und Bremsteile werden mit TÜV-Gutachten oder ABE geliefert. Die Unterlagen sind beim jeweiligen Produkt angegeben.
Do R80 or R100 parts fit the R65?
Teilweise.
Can I increase the performance of my R65?
Yes. An engine overhaul, optimized carburetors, and a dyno tune often result in noticeably more power and torque. We would be happy to advise you via our contact page.
How much does an R65 conversion cost?
This depends heavily on the scope – from a simple tail conversion to a completely rebuilt bike. Send us your ideas via the parts inquiry form, and we will prepare a quote for you.
