Weighing and balancing piston weights is one of the fundamental steps in carefully building or optimizing a 4-cylinder engine. Differences in piston weight create additional inertial forces at higher engine speeds. When pistons are precisely matched to one another, the mechanical balance of the engine improves significantly.
At Sport-Evolution, all four pistons are weighed exactly, and their masses are balanced as far as is technically feasible. The goal is to achieve the most uniform crankshaft drive possible, where the individual pistons generate comparable dynamic forces. The result is smoother, more refined engine operation and reduced stress on the crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, and other components of the crank assembly.
Especially when optimizing an engine, weight balancing of the pistons should therefore be an integral part of the engine build. The higher the target RPM range, the more important it becomes to balance the moving masses as precisely as possible. At the same time, mechanical durability is improved, creating the foundation for a long-lasting, high-performance engine.
